Into the Woods week 6

Into the Woods

week commencing 11.04.22

First week of the Easter holidays and I had been thinking about how we could make the wolf character work for the show with the quick change over. I remembered one of the directors saying that normally its just a mask that's used in these shows. I had already been thinking that this would be how we would have to make this character. I looked online for inspiration and decided to have ago at making a mask after i had seen some that other people had made. I know one of the directors had previously said he wanted him not so wolf like and more on the style of how Johnny Depp played his version on the wolf in the film, but I had seen some idea's of  more wolf like masks and I wanted to see how this would look just wasn't to sure if this work out (its been along time since ive messed about with paper mache 🙈). Since I had the two weeks to play with and this is only an idea i thought why not even if this doesn't turn out I can say I've had ago haha.

I manged to find part of a 3D mask template that would give me the shape of the nose and eyes, then I had to improvise and make the rest of the shape of the wolf I used sellotape to stick it together at first to make sure i had the shape i wanted, before I went in and started the paper mache technique. I had made the mask out of card so once I started  adding the tissue and glue mixture to the the card it I was having to leave it dry for a while as it was making the card underneath all soft. The mask also started to lose its shape as the card became soft. To solve this problem I used wooden skewers and typed these onto thew mask to help hold the shape, I also used the wooden skewers to keep the mask in shape                         while the paper mache dried.

This process took around 4/5 days for the mask to fully dry out as each time i added the next layer of paper mache, the pervious layer was wet again. Once this was complete though the mask and then nice and hard and held its own shape.

Next step was figuring out how I was going to bring the mask to life. I had thought of a couple of different ideas for this...

1. crepe wool to make the mask have actual hair

2. paint on a dystopian design rather than normal wolf

3. more normal version of a wolf using paint

I decided that I would start painting the wolf and see how that turned out first, I also thought that the mask was really big so i trimmed down the ears and added some shape to the sides to make it more 'wolfy'.

I decided to leave the mask like this for now for a couple of reasons, I dont know whether the mask will actually get used and if it does I thought i would see what the directors ideas where, if he wanted to keep it like this or make some changes. I will have to wait until we are back at college to see what the outcome is. I'm glad I've still giving it ago even if it doesn't get used for the show.
